Brickwork: Historic Development, Decay, Conservation and Repair

Fired clay ceramics start to react chemically with atmospheric moisture as soon as it is removed from the kiln. Researchers believe they can pinpoint the precise age of materials like brick, tile and pottery by calculating how much its weight has changed. The team from Edinburgh and Manchester universities hope the method will prove as significant as radiocarbon dating. Radiocarbon dating, used for bone or wood, cannot be used for ceramic material because it does not contain carbon. He and his team, from the universities of Edinburgh and Manchester and the Museum of London, were able to date brick samples from Roman, medieval and modern periods with remarkable accuracy. They have established that their technique can be used to determine the age of objects up to 2, years old but believe it has the potential to be used to date samples around 10, years old. Researchers are now planning to look at whether the new dating technique can be applied to earthenware, bone china and porcelain. Dr Moira Wilson from Manchester University led the research.

One of the most useful information provided by bricks and mortars is the possibility of date them (relative and absolute dating). This is very useful as information.

Examine the bricks and learn the date—or so says this myth. If you see glazed headers, you know the buildings was built before , because a law was passed in against burning hardwood. Hardwood is necessary to make fire hot enough to glaze bricks in a kiln. A header, by the way, is a brick turned so the short end faces out instead of the long side. It is not possible to date a building this way. This combo creates the glazing seen on the bricks that are making up the fire tunnels in the bottom of the kiln.

However, the real problem here is that there was no colonial law against burning hardwoods. Hardwoods gradually became scarce in colonial America because of their desirability in both England and the colonies. From the earliest years, English colonists burned hardwood to produce potash, used in making glass, for export to England where few hardwood trees remained.

Traditional Brickwork

Deciding on the date of a brick is a far from simple process. The very first point to remember is that bricks are regularly re-cycled; consequently bricks may well be older than the buildings that contain them. Secondly, any attempt to date British bricks stylistically must allow for regional variations; the size of pre th century bricks, and their arrangement, did not conform to any nationwide standards.

If you want to date your local bricks you will have to get information specific to the county or city that you live in. Several methods of scientifically dating individual bricks have been explored.

Abstract: Traditional building materials provide valuable information on the past of ancient and historical buildings. Studies on the characterisation of such materials provide information on the origin of raw materials, manufacture and building technologies, or decay of materials.

Also, they provide information on different building phases and periods chronology. Among traditional materials, bricks and mortars are particularly interesting. One of the most useful information provided by bricks and mortars is the possibility of date them relative and absolute dating. This is very useful as information from written historical documents is unusual.

Different procedures have been developed for the study of building chronologies.

The application of Thermally TL and Optically OSL Stimulated Luminescence on bricks used as building material has allowed solving an chronological issue in the field of historical building dating. The possibility to use one or more methodologies of dating is closely related to the luminescent and granulometric characteristics of the sample.

Using some brick samples collected in the church of Sain Seurin in Bordeaux France , this paper discusses the implications and the possibility to use different approaches and techniques for dating. With this aim luminescence measurements were performed on both polymineral fine grain and quartz inclusion phases extracted from each brick. Britain first acquired the skills to manufacture fired clay bricks when large parts of the country became part of the Roman Empire in the 1st century AD. The bricks made by the Romans were generally wider and thinner than those today and were used in various ways, including as lacing courses in walls of rubble stonemasonry and in the construction of supporting pillars for hypocaust heating systems. When the Romans left Britain in the 5th century, so too did brick-making, until the 12th century.

Construction on this began in the 11th century, reusing materials from the Roman British town Verulamium. The earliest known use of brick manufactured in the UK after the Romans left is widely regarded as being Coggeshall Abbey in Essex, the oldest parts of the monastic buildings dating to Beverley North Bar in East Yorkshire is a very good surviving example of medieval English brickwork, construction of which began around The bricks used were thin at 50mm and, as with indigenous bricks of the time, somewhat uneven in shape and size.

How to Date Bricks & Cement Blocks

Since we have a range of period when the site was active, it is possible that the dates of structures in each unexcavated mound are decades or centuries apart. To understand the time sequence in which the site existed one could use absolute dating method. This paper reports result of preliminary dating analysis using Accelerator Mass Spectrometry AMS technique on bricks collected from the vicinity of the unexcavated mounds in environs of Nalanda.

Bricks from a group of four independently dated late medieval buildings in Newcastle upon Tyne have been tested to establish their suitability.

Bricks and concrete blocks are some of the oldest and most reliable of building products. Bricks were first used 5, years ago and were made from dirt using straw as a binder. Later bricks were made from clay and fired in a kiln to increase their durability. The history of concrete blocks dates back to ancient Greece and Rome, although they were not manufactured commercially until the early 20th century.

Dating old brick and block is not a precise science, but there are a few things to look for. Examine the surface of the brick. Old bricks were formed by hand, so look for irregularities in shape. They should be slightly uneven and may contain straw. These older hand-shaped bricks are larger than the bricks made today, although never larger than a hand width. Look for an indentation on the brick’s surface. Older bricks do not have a dent in the middle, called a frog. Instead, older bricks only have a lip at the edge to hold the mortar in place between the bricks.

Look for a manufacturer’s stamp on the brick’s surface.

Dating bricks and mortars of ancient and historical buildings

Dating buildings is important for survey reports: particularly for conservation appraisals, archaeological assessments, and for predicting age-related latent defects, such as Georgian ‘snapped-header’ walls, inter- wars ‘Regent Street Disease’, or post-war high-alumina cement concrete deterioration1. When a building is original, and typical of its period, its age can usually be judged by its external appearance alone.

Every era has its distinctive architectural styles, ranging from wavy roofs of the s, to bow-backed Georgian terraces of the s.

Man has used brick for building purpose for thousands of years. Bricks date back to BC, which makes them one of the oldest known building materia.

Different approaches to date bricks from historical buildings

Previously considered to be an inferior material to stone, brick construction was rarely used in Britain until the close of the Middle Ages. Gerard Lynch looks at its historical development over the last years and its conservation and repair. This was a direct result of lack of local stone, an increasing shortage of good timber, and the influence of Europe where brickwork was used extensively.
